help with timing 93 dodge with 318
just put a motor in my buddies truck and its out of time bad, for some reason he didnt make sure timing chain gears where exact and now i think its leading to this problem: with the truck running its running way off the advanced side of the marker on timing chain cover according to light. made sure the rotor button was in correct spot and tried to move wires on distributor around to compensate it, the truck lags while starting and does not idle well if any at all but when its reved up it sounds good. could someone please tell me the steps to get it closer to where it needs to be. if i remember correctly it should be around 12 degrees BTDC, faught with it all day really need some help. Thanks
for my understanding, on the timing chain cover the degrees going from TDC to the right is below and to the left is advanced? "looking at it from front of the motor, and on the distributor which way do you turn it to advance? keep in mind im in engine compartment working things around and buddy is with the light telling me where everything is reading (he does not have much mechanical experience) so i kinda had to guess what he was actually reading
when you were trying to set the timing did you unplug the temp sensor that reports to the computer? why exactly did the motor have to be replaced? does it still have a catalytic converter?
no i didnt unplug sensor, didnt know anything about this method till a few min ago. the reason motor was replaced he had spun a bearing oil pump went down and he kinda ignored low oil pressure on the gauge, it does not have cats. oh and where is this sensor located
thanks ill have to try it tomorrow, on the distributer can you tell me which way is advancing? "clockwise or counter clockwise" and the gauge on the timing chain cover which side of tdc is btdc

Dude save your self some excedrine and just take it to a good shop. If you make statements like " from my understanding the distributor should not effect timing" Then you truly are lacking any understanding of what you are trying to fix. I have yet to see a situation where things work out well.
If you believe, as you stated, that the timing chain gears were not installed in the proper alignment, you will have to remove the chain cover and fix that. Nothing else will fix that problem.
think we are gettin closer to solving the problem without taking the chain cover off, we put a hot battery and new plugs, this cleared things up more than anything done so far without tearing back into motor, also found that the intake is sucking air between the gasket, could this cause the problem also
