Anyone got any tips for a 76 440?
The Haynes manual is not real descript in tuning procedures for the carb. It is currently running a bit on the rich side. Doing a tune up helped, but I still need to tune the carb. I know it is rich because when I take the lid off the air cleaner it runs SOOO much better. It is rich off idle, tries to chug and backfired on me once when I was moving it. So do I play with the idle mixture screws?
Or can I redneck-it and put a larger air cleaner on?

Gently screw both mixture screws in until they bottom out while counting the turns. From here on always make small adjustments and be sure to adjust both screws the same amount each time. Turn each screw out the same number of turns as the average of the number of turns in. This is your starting point. Now turn each screw in the same amount until you get the highest possible idle and then reset the idle to specs. Repeat the adjustment of the mixture screws to obtain the highest idle possible and reset the idle again. This is easiest with a tach but it can be done by ear.
