Why was the wheel off? Did the hub break and leave him walking? On the dust cap, do you mean the chrome cover on the end of the axle housing that is covering the auto locking hub? If yes I would junk yard it all.

the guy wanted to make sure i survived the brakes and im guessing he didnt tighten the lug nuts and they loosened up and it came off and i couldnt find the cap where the tire fell off and i was thinking calling the junkyard for it but that would prob be my last resort

If the cap was knocked off by the wheel it may have stripped out the screws that hold the cap on or broken them off. You may need a whole new hub but only you can check that.

You need to decide if you want manual hubs or automatic hubs. If it is auto a junk yard is probably your best bet.

Yep. I lost one of my dust caps right before I was planning on switching in some Warn manuals so it worked out alright.

IMO, manual hubs are almost always better. It reduces drag on the front wheels, which allows for better milage and less wear. Also, if your truck sees any trail time, manual hubs are generally stronger and have a more positive engagment. Once you turn the selector, there is no guessing if it worked or not, you just know.
