Cool timing gear

hey all, i have a 1985 d350 w/ 360 eng. replacing timing gear set. truck has been running and driving for 3-4 yrs. milage has flipped im sure. chain has 1/2 to 3/4 inch slop. when i align the two marks my rotor is pointing backwards to the fire wall. my haynes book says that when TDC that is the exhaust stroke. when i rotate the eng to TDC with the rotor facing forward like the books says, the timing marks do not line up. WTF it never ran super good, but it was my dog hauling junkin truck so i never really have got on it. can it run when it appears to be 180* out?

your crank turns twice for every 1 rotation of the cam so the timing marks could line up but your distributor would be appear to point 180* off. if the trucks will start you most likely have it correct.
