does it seem to blow gas or air out the throttle body when you go to start it?

At TDC the rotor can point directly at #1 or directly away from #1. That is why I said TDC with the #1 cylinder in firing position. Remember the crank turns twice for every rotation of the cam. That means the crank has 2 TDCs for every one full rotation of the distributor.

when I first started messin with it it was burpin fuel up thru the throttle body but once I pulled the distributor and everything it stopped and it would run but only at wot which makes me wonder if I might have goofed an put it in 180 out it wouldn't be the first time I know I had number one on the compression stroke would 180 out would make it hard to start like I have to keep it held to the floor and once it does I still have to or it dies as soon as I let off just a little bit ?

I would bring it to TDC, pull the distributor, and turn the distributor 180 from where it is. That is the easiest way to find out if it is 180 out. Unless you want to pull the drivers valve cover so you can tell if both valves are closed which would mean it is at TDC in the firing position.

does it blow gas or air out the throttle body when you try to start it? usually that is one of the symptoms of having the distributor being 180* off. just have to take the air cleaner off to check.

when I frist got it home and tried to start it it was blowing fuel out the throttle body which made me think the previous owner had put the dizzy in 180 out but after I pulled it an put it at tdc it stopped and my issue went from that to only starting with the pedal on the floor and only running at wot

are you sure it was 180* off? the crank turns 2 times for every 1 rotation of the cam so you have 2 top dead centers so it can sometimes look like you are 180* off but are not.
