i was thinking the exact same thing when i notice it a couple weeks ago. according to the diagrams it is actually a 20 gauge but that is still pretty week compared to the 16 gauge they used on my 81 from the factory

My diagram is showing 20 gauge on them as well, and when I put a meter to them, I am only getting 12.1 volts while running. My harness appears to be in great shape. Im very excited for this mod.

As wolfie said, mine is a '78 W350.

I say go for it! It is fun to do as it is easy if you have a working knowledge of DC electronics like I do and it makes a huge difference for the low dollar cost. PLUS you can go to a different H4 headlight housing and brighter lamps as well so get even more light out of the truck.

Update, still working perfectly and after driving it a few times at night, what a difference! WHITE BRIGHT light compared to a couple candles behind the glass. I am getting some housings that take H4s and are a way more effecient and better pattern plus some 80~110 bulbs. Now that my wiring will support it and am getting a high amp alternator, a 140a job.

glad they are still working good for you. do you know what alternator you currently have? only reason i ask is i think they offer 3 different alternators in 91 and i think they are all interchangeable. 75/90/120amp. only reason i mention this is because i know that sometimes those bit higher amp alternators cost a bit more and rock auto lists the 75 amp alternator for about the same price as the 120 amp alternator.

should say on the alternator. there should be a tag on it. i think it should say something like family 75hs, family 90hs or family 120hs. not really sure since i only have a 75 and 90 amp alternator. could also try looking up the part numbers on the tag.
