Default throttle rod adjust

Greetings from Scotland. I am trying to set the throttle rod at the point where it connects to the swivel at the transmission. I cannot see how the rod can move freely inside the swivel when the lock nut is tightened.I have attached a diagram from the manual. The van is a 1991 dodge b250 with the 318 engine and 727 transmission. The problem is that it will not change down nor kickdown. It changes up smoothly. Any advice appreciated

did you make sure the return spring is there? it is suppose to pull the throttle rod forward when you take your foot off the gas.

the throttle rod should not move freely in the adjustable swivel. the swivel lock screw should prevent that. you should pretty much want to push the throttle rod as far forward as you can and then tighten up the swivel lock screw.

Just to expand on what CW said, you need to first completely loosen the swivel lock screw. Make sure it moves freely back and forth within the swivel lock. You may need to scrub the rod with some steel wool somewhat and or spray with some cleaner. Allowing the swivel lock to stay in it's free standing position push the kickdown rod all the way forward as it will go and tighten the swivel lock screw to hold it in place.
