I would think that Acetone would act more as a cleaner. Almost certainly wont varnish.

ya. it is usually what people recommend to clean a old dirty gas tank. i think it is also what makes nail polish remover remove nail polish.

yep no dought about it scooter78 is the thinker here. BUT that IS good. i use marvel mystery oil, in the gas, and the intake. have been using MMO for 30 years.. some say it gets better MPG. i use a upper lube jar like the old MMO upper oiler. but from ampcolubes.com the mmo i put in the gas lubes the injectors, fuel pump. the upper oiler lubes the valve stems. it makes the engine start very fast. i run 3 oz to 10 gal, in the tank. and 1 QT in 800-900 miles in the upper oiler. i might have the total a little over dosed. iam in the posses of turning the upper oiler down a little at a time. the old marvel mystery oil unit you could count the drops. the recomended abount was 6-8 drops a min, at idle. i think the amount is not that critical. i think ill not try Acetone cause i dont want to mix two diff things. the Acetone might be ok to use.

4B. If you hear VRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTRRRRRTRTRRRRRTRRTRRRRM, then you have pinging.

It sounds a lot like rocks or marbles bouncing around. It happens most when your combustion chamber is most hot. For me, that means warming up the carbon deposits with high load driving. You can have slight inaudible ping.

All that really means in regards to acetone is that it didn't increase the octane enough to stop my motor from pinging. But there are others things to worry about than octane rating. My mpg stays the same with 87 and 91 octane, but I run 91 when I'm towing, since I don't want to beat up my pistons.
Pinging is caused by detonation which if i remember correctly is when the gas explodes before the plug fires in some cases this happens under load at WOT because the timing is advanced too far. In other cases it will happen all the time and that is generally because there is not enough octane in the fuel. A high compression motor designed to run on 93 octane (or higher) may run on 87 octane but it will ping which can and will over time hurt the motor or in the case of the newer computer controlled cars the computer will retard the timing and u will notice less power.

However in a lower compression motor there is basically no benefit to running higher octane fuel. If you notice a power increase from running higher octane fuel you should be running it all the time

Detonation, and thus pinging, can also occur from hot spots in the combustion chamber, or from too lean of a fuel mixture. I believe that my truck has carbon deposits in the heads which heat up when under a high load to a point at which they are auto-igniting the fuel.

you are so right " detonation" is bad. but dont forget preignition. technically the two are different, but sound the same and damage the same. the technical difference is very interesting. the history of how the american car makers solved the trouble is very interesting.

I know the thread is a few months old now, but did we ever come up with results?

My 85 Ram does not vent gasoline fumes to the air, unless you take the gas cap off or loosen it. Older models might have vented tanks, not for sure the year model when vented tanks were eliminated.
