I have an 86 d150 shortbed. The driver side door does not close up all the way.. i know that the door is the problem or the entire lock but can the lock be replaced with a newer one or will i have to get one from a yard for the same model truck?

i had the same problem on my 90 dodge. more then likey the problem is the door hinges. i suggest closing the door to the best of your abbility and then looking to see if the door sags or if you can pick up on the door when you close it, to see if it will close all the way. if so the hinges might need to be adjusted. if not you might just need to adjust the catch pin on the cab, it could have moved also. if it is the lock thats bad, i believe the doors are similar from the 70's up to 93, so i believe any lock mechanism from that time periode would work. i hoped this helped

 

My '86 does the same thing for both doors...It really needs to be slammed to close fully. I think the hinges have sagged over the years

 

The pins in the hinges get worn and cause the doors to sag. There are replacement hinge pins and bushings available.
