Default re-setting my timing

after the new ignition module, I have a tad less power and know I nned to reset my timing. So is this the correct way to do it?

Unplug the tempreture sensor, then wait till the check engine light comes on then set the timing and then reset the computer to get rid of the code for the temp sensor? And on this truck, is it 10degrees BTDC?

For those interested, this information is correct. And if you live above sea level, rule of thumb is 1 degree advanced for every 1000ft above sea level. I am going to try 14 BTDC but I live at 7500 and drive at 5000.
