Default Thermostat wont stop leaking

I'm have a great deal of trouble with my thermostat. Around the beginning of January my thermostat started leaking around the gasket, probably about a 1/4 gallon every 2 weeks. Last Thursday it was a little warmer, so i decided to replace the gasket, which made it worse, probably would have leaked about 1/4 gallon every week. Yesterday I tried to change it again, this time putting a new thermostat and housing on as well. The new thermostat (bought high quality one at Orielly's) didn't fit because it was to thin, the ridge around the edge wasn't thick enough to push against the the intake and the housing. So no matter how tight i tried to make it the thermostat was loose. I put the old one back in with another new gasket, different kind. Now it probably will leak a 1/4 gallon a day. I have replaced thermostat gaskets before with success, but I can not get this to stop leaking. My next step is to try putting some blue rtv on both sides of the gasket. Any ideas on what to try or where to buy a thermostat that isn't cheap and thin??

The first time i'm blaming the gasket, it had an adhesive side that was suppose to stick but it didnt seal at all. The second time, I cleaned it thoroughly, I made sure all of the previous gasket was off, I took fine emery cloth and lightly sanded it, and i cleaned it with brake cleaner, yet it still didn't seal.

I had another idea, thought maybe someone would know if it would be considered good or bad. I know on some vehicles the gasket goes on top of the thermostat, would that fix the situation?

what brand gaskets are you using? i know some are pretty much garbage and you are better off using RTV. fel-pro gaskets are usually pretty good.

The gaskets were Murray brand, they were what Orielly's carries. On their website they show they offer fel-pro. Would it work to take off the gasket that I just installed that's leaking, dry it out and put blue rtv on it?

you can use RTV all by itself but you have to let it partially dry for about an hour before you snug things down. i don't see why you couldn't try letting the gasket dry if you wanted.

I had the same problem, tried a new gasket twice. I used rtv with no gasket and it stopped leaking.

weld it!!.... haha

i had the same problem and i thought i had all of the old gasket off and it all looked like clean metal when i went at it with a scraper, but it wouldn't stop leaking.. i finally took a dremel with a small wire wheel to it and it took of the rest of the gasket that looked just like the metal.. or whatever it was.. then i put a new gasket on and it stopped it.
