How do I flush my ATF?
1987 power ram 250, 5.9l
Im looking for some info on how I should flush my ATF without fancy tools and all. This is a beater truck so I really dont want to pay to have it done or do I have the money to buy any new tools.
If I remove the pan will it all come out?
Also what kind of ATF do I out back in and where does it get put back in?
Thanks for your help.

ugh. I don't recall which fluid it is, got the owners manual or a Chilton's/Haynes manual? I've got one
hey, just found it sitting next to me.
All auto trannies up to 88 use Dexron III ATF
I don't really think there's a way to completely swap the fluid without a machine to pump in while it's draining out. You drain it by dropping the pan, then fill it through the dipstick tube. There will be some residual that doesn't get changed, but it should be ok.

Chilton's says that you will need to add 4 quarts, run it and check levels, bring it up to the Add 1 pint mark, then drive it for 20 minutes to bring it up to temp and it should be between the Add and Full marks. Add more as needed.
I read a little more and you'll have to pull the tranny if you want to drain the torque converter on any manufactured after 1977. The tranny pan bolts get tightened to 150 inch pounds, and the filter screen are 35 inch pounds.

Depending on what you do to the tranny...flush vs just filter...I would say 4 to 8 qts..don't overfill and get a filter and gasket kit. Don't overtighten the pan bolts or you will damage the new gasket. I have seen some cans of AT flush on the shelf of some auto parts stores but I have never used them, you might look into that to perform a flush. Go down to NAPA and look over their stock of canned products, you should be able to find the flush.
