Carb selection
I know I'm opening a can o' worms here, but I'd like some input. I've just finished up a 360 for my '83 1/2 ton, and I'm unsure on what carb I should run. The engine specs are;
9:1 Pistons
Edelbrock LD340 intake
Long tubes (if they fit properly)
The truck is an automatic 2wd with 2.92 (at the moment) gears. I have a Carter AVS off a 340, an AVS off a 440, and a large cfm Thermoquad.
The intake has no choke well, and I hate manual chokes, so I'd need an electric setup. I'd also like to stick with a vacuum secondary carb. I've never run a Holley, but I hear they tend to leak and blow power valves? I looked at the Exelbrock Thunder, but that's basically what I have already.
Thoughts?
Thanks!!

Is that 650 the Thunder AVS? How's that working out for you?
It's just a personal preference with the choke. I find I'm constantly fiddling with it, I don't like having it running over the engine to the carb, and auto/electric choke are just convenient.
I'll look into the Edelbrock and see what there is to see.

mines a 2bbl but my buddy has a 600 on his truck and it runs better with the 600 than the 650... it gets just a little too much fuel with the 650 so it would bog down a bit and he hauls stuff so that wasn't good
The trucks not on the road yet.
The motor is a 360. Flat top pistons, thin head gasket (should make about 9:1 compression), Lunati cam (256/262 duration/.454/.475 lift), ported and polished heads machined for 2.02 intake valves and an Edelbrock Performer intake, long tube headers and some secret stuff the engine builder won't tell me about.
I'll let ya know how the carb works in about a month.

Well, got it running today! Had a bit of a fireball out the carb, turns out it doesn't like it so much if the distributor is 180 degrees out. I'm running an old Carter AVS that I had on it before the rebuild, because I know it works properly. I poked around at 600 cfm carbs, and have been eyeballing the Summit Racing carb. Good price, and tons of positive reviews. But, I gotta get the grill and signal lights in, two new tires, plates and a straight bumper before I go buying carbs. Can't wait to hit the highway and see how it does!

Thanks for the offer! I do have an 850 T-quad from a 75 440 truck, but I had issued with it having an internal vacuum leak I couldn't track down, so I cleaned up the AVS and used it. Once I've got the timing where it likes it, I may give it another shot.
Some times the body of the carb will get warped from uneven tightening of the screws and cause a vacuum leak.
Some times it can be remedied by having a perfectly flat area and a sheet of fine sand paper by moving the carb body back & forth on the flat piece and sand paper.
