Default Alternator issues. Please help

Hi all, so my alternator went out on my 1990 W150 4x4 with the 316 (318?).
I've been getting mixed information as to which alternator I need for replacing.
I've seen both internal and external being the one said that I need. Does anyone know for certain what route I need to go?

Default alternator

The voltage output of the alternator is controlled by the computer on the v6 & 5.2. However I remember right, I think the 5.9 has an external regulator. newtjr
