Default 1989 ram d150

Planning to rebuild a 1989. First step is seeing if the engine is any good. Went to hook up the battery and noticed the positive cable is grounded. Someone told me it's common for older vehicles...that doesn't sound right to me so I wanted to ask. If it's not guess the first step is to rerun the cable wires

How do you know it's the positive cable? Just because it may be red doesn't mean it's positive.

The cable runs from the starter to the battery and there is a wire connected to the terminal that runs to the body.
