Default Ignition coil not getting power

I have a 1991 dodge ram d150, 318, 5.2. Ok so awhile ago my truck wouldn't start. We checked everything related to starting the truck and we traced it back to the ignition coil. The ignition coil was not getting a spark so me and my friend rigged up a kill switch from the battery to the coil now it starts and runs, though lately the truck has been running rather badly and idk why. It kicks sometimes, the idle revs high here and there and today at a stoplight the truck just cut off. What would be the problem as to why the coil isn't getting a spark? And why is my truck acting up now? Grant you I bought a brand new ignition coil, changed the relays, and my truck has a TBI (throttle body injector) so it does not have a ballist resistor.
