I have an 83 with a 318 and I pull a trailer with an Exmark commercial Lawnmower and a regular Lawn Tractor plus a heap of tools. It struggles but that is due to my piece engine and tranny. I'm sure if you're motor's good, it could handle it.

What's the tongue weight of the trailer loaded up? How much will be in the bed while towing? So long as you're not overloading it, you'll be fine.
My 86 did just fine towing a ~4000 lb rally car on a trailer with the bed loaded with spares, tools, a generator, etc. In 2nd I can pull all but the steepest passes at speed.

With a load leveling hitch you'll be fine.
