Default Major Water Leak.

I have a 1991 Ram 4x4 with a 5.2 V-8 and automatic trans. It has a major water leak. When adding water to the radiator you can here it coming out somewhere inside the bell housing and see it exiting around the bell housing. My question, is there a freeze plug located inside the bell housing or am I looking at larger problem. If there is a plug in there what is the easiest way to replace it.

Yes there are freeze plugs on the back of the block. Check to make sure one of the freeze plugs on the back of the heads is not leaking. You have your choice, you can remove the transfer case and transmission and just fix the rear plug/s or you can remove the motor and replace all the freeze plugs on the engine when they are easy to get to. Throw the engine on a stand and maybe reseal it and throw in a timing chain and gears or whatever. If one is leaking than they rest may be getting ready to leak. The worst case scenerio is you have a crack in the block. You can get a complete set of freeze plugs in a kit for about $15 at NAPA and you might consider getting the tools to remove/install them. You can get the plugs in brass or steel...the originals are steel but I would use the brass ones and opt to remove the engine.
