1990 3-Speed Tranny Problem....
i havea 1990 Dodge Ram D-150 V-6 3-Speed Auto(A999).....i dont know much about trannys but when i drive it wont go over 45 mph and if i try i have to realy get on the gas.....but the engine would rev alot higher then it would.....it most of the time wont go over 45...
I Drive a 1990 Dodge D-150 Ram with a 3.9l v6 3-speed auto tranny and i've come to terms with my truck taking ten min. to get up to highway speeds have you tried shifting it from 1st to 2nd and then into drive? just shift when you hear it rev high.
Hello All, This is my first post here..
I also have a 1990 V6... Ram 150
Something just isnt right...
It does take forever to get up to freeway speeds and anything past half throttle it seems to slow down.
It has 60,000 original miles, one owner and garaged for the last 15 years.
It is a hand-me-down from my father in law....
My Aerosar with a smaller V6 is 10 times faster, this thing is so slow that semi-tractor trailors can beat me up the slightest incline.
It acts like the timing is retarded or a timing chain slipped or a massive vacuum leak...
(The transmission shifts like a stuck vacuum modulator)
I don't know if this model even has a vacuum modulator..
I have not had much time to look into it but as it is, it is too dangerous to drive.
FYI, I worked as a mechanic for Dodge back in the early '70's, began to specialize in electrical which eventually led to a career in computers and electronics. I hope to be of help to others here with those older models...

Ok, I just climbed under the Red Beastie and I found that it has manual shift down linkage.
Nothing wrong with that..
It was however stuck in the kickdown position...
I forced it back into Non-kickdown position but when I moved it back to kickdown it stuck again.
I pulled the last link between the tranny and what I will call an intermediate pivot point between the lower and upper linkage.
It just pops off without any tools. I greased the ends, checked the lever at the trans to make sure there were no problems with it then popped the linkage back on.
The difference was day and night....
It is NOT a race truck, but at least I am not in danger of getting run over by a 10 ton semi...
I would not have believed a stuck kickdown would have made that much difference...
I hope that helps the person that started this thread..

my tranny went out....got a new tranny a month ago.....i dunno hats wrong with your dodge but mines not slow at all...i beat Vortec 4.3L's and some older 305 trucks...i dont have anything done to it except exhaust....mine peels out all the damn time when i turn i only have to barely touch the petal....and it will burnout off takeoff every 2 of 4 times i try.....it never did anyof this until i got a ne tranny and cables and everything...my truck has 180k miles on it and getting rebuild when it hits 200k...then im selling i the Green Machine...lol its forest ranger green..cuz it was in the forest ranger business prolly why it has positrac.but neways i fixed the problem
