Default Odometer Question

I have a 1990 D150 truck. The speedometer works fine, but the odometer doesn't work at all. I read multiple posts that mention a possible stripped gear, and i apologize if this has been answered and i missed it. Is that always the case or is there something else i can check?

Sometimes the plastic gears inside will break. I've also seen the reset stem stick and left the odometer disengaged. It's fairly easy to pull the cluster an see if the gears are god.
