This is a follow up to the Radiator Question thread I started a couple weeks ago. As is obvious from the pictures the lower rad hose has to be on the passenger’s side because of the water pump design. This is a 77 block 440 on a 79 Power Wagon. Assuming the water pump is original to the engine, what would this engine originally have been in? The water pump is very different than the one on the 440 in my Charger.
The pump isn't really visible. The pump on big blocks is a small flat piece. What is visible in the photos are the pump mount. The pump itself is a small square assembly. You can just see the edge of it behind the metal pulley. If the engine is post 1967, the original VIN will be stamped into the block. Usually just above the edge of the oil pan.
Does this picture help any? Lower pulley comes off the crank, top pulley is water pump and fan. Hose on left of picture goes to lower passenger’s side of rad.
To me this is a much different water pump than on a car. Was this pump used on all trucks? Motor homes? Police cars?
I know where the VIN is stamped above the oil pan but there is nothing on this engine. Casting number is 4006630-440-4. The date is 10-26-77. I’m just curious where this engine might have started it’s life.
Sometime after 1970 they stopped stamping the vin on the block. The later (late 70's) big blocks had the water pump housing like yours. No way to tell what it was in.
