Default 1990 W150 Shuts Down While Driving

· I have a 1990 W150 Power Ram, 5.9/46RH. It has TBI with a return fuel line. It has SBEC as its computer. It has a Hall effect distributor with a 5 V return wire to the computer that allows the computer to calculate RPM and helps the computer to then calculate the amount of fuel to send through the 2 fuel injectors at the throttle body.

· The truck spontaneously cuts off while driving – engine hot. There is no coughing or sputtering. It just cuts off. Then after waiting several minutes, it usually starts up again and drives home like normal. I have a friend with a 96 1500 that is doing the same thing. I’ve been over the coil, the wiring, the distributor. I replaced the Hall effect sensor three times. I’ve replaced the SBEC with a rebuilt Delco unit. Replaced the fuel pump. Replaced the fuel filter twice. Replaced ASD. Something is getting hot and needs to cool off. Has anyone run into this problem? How did you fix it? Thanks for any help, Ben

Does your truck have a ballast resistor? The older ones did but I don't know about the OBD I injected units. Ballast resistors could cause what you're experiencing. It's a little white porcelain block, about 3 inches long with an electrical plug on each end. They get fairly hot and if they have a crack, it opens up. I've also seen the brain box go bad, but, there again, I don't know if the fuel injected units have them.

You definitely have an electrical component failing.

Truck does not have a ballast resistor. I bought the truck in 2009. I put the engine, trans, axles, etc in it. I believe carburetor trucks 1987 and prior still had ballast resistor to allow the magnetic pickup distributor and coil to function at lower ignition run voltage. My truck is 1990.

I agree. It's electrical.
