Default Fuel Sender Fitment Question

Hi, I have a 1989 gas model with that one year sending unit. I took it out today to fix the gas gauge and I was successful. However, when putting it back I found that it didn’t seem to fit right, like it was an inch too tall. I had to force it down somewhat firmly against spring pressure while I started the clamp. Now, it does have that giant spring shaped line so I thought maybe that’s normal but it’s bothering me enough I figured I would ask here.

My '90 seemed like it was spring-loaded too.
