Altenator Bulckhead fiasco 1975
Altenator fiasco. I own a 1985 d150 automatic 360 it is registered as a 1975. howeverLast year I decided to revamp things. The bulkhead is a mess. I think I have rewired things wrong. .as I have replaced the altenator and voltage regulator too many times to mention. One minute it's charging and the next ists overcharging. And once again it's not charging again.. additionally sometimes when I'm driving the starter will engage I pull over and pull the starter wire and it stops and the truck still stays running. What can I do to upgrade to an altenator with built in regulator. And would that be a good choice for a modification. Also more info on how to shunt away from the dash ammeter as it has been known to overheat. Ok thank you
How do you register a 85 as 75? What happens if you get pulled over and the cop knows it's not 75? The 70's trucks didn't have shunts and the amp meters melted. Usually with shunts very low current is flowing threw those wires(to the gauge). May be better just to use a voltage gauge. If there is a issue with the shunt it will effect other things. The amp meter or shunt is between the battery and the alternator. This link is for the 70 trucks but will be similar on the 80's.

I know it's sounds crazy but apparently the guy i purchased it from was all about his mopars . That was all he owned .oHe owned a classic super B his wife had the new charger and I followed him to the dealership for his challenger. My truck was set up.to race . Blm shifter two types of coil packs super rear suspension. Don't know how he did it but it's legal with a salvaged title and no.dam smog. There are many wires at the bulckhead that are not connected. The few wires left were bare and corroded. Somewhere I have something wrong because one minute I'm charging the next I'm overcharging. The starter will randomly engage. Now I'm back to not charging again. Uhgg thank you for your response. I have downloaded and printed out so many different wire diagrams even from mad electrical. I think I have wires backward or something. Just the charging system not working. The truck runs beautiful
I had the bullet connectors in the thick alternator wire corrode and that spiked the charge voltage - depending on the weather. Pulled them apart, cleaned, and sprayed with corrosion inhibitor; back to normal ever since.
As for the 75 vs 85 registration, I would make sure I was advertising the appropriate VIN on the dash or drivers door. (and not both!) A simple grille swap adds or removes a decade on these trucks - to the average person anyway.
