Stock 360 4-bbl intake manifold works just about as well as the Edelbrock Performer series, and it's inexpensive if you can find one local. Get a 600cfm carb, I'd recommend a Holley or OEM Rochester.

I'd prefer the Edelbrock over the stock one since the Edelbrock one weighs less than half of the weight of the stock one.

That's your preference. The fact is that performance wise there's very little gain compared to a stock one, except for the weight. The price, on the other hand, is quite different. Swap meet or junkyard iron manifolds can be had for really cheap, whereas an aluminum manifold will cost a lot more. Brand new they're what, $200 something. With that kind of price savings you can pick up a good set of plug wires, plugs, cap/rotor, coil, and probably the orange ECM as well.

very good point. i went with the 600 cfm holley on a edelbrock performer intake. it looks great. but the old iron would be far more cost effective. also if you get the edelbrock intake it sets higher than the stockers and needs a different throttle cable bracket.

Good points on the manifold, guys. As for the carb, don't get anything bigger than a 650 c.f.m. Anything bigger will pump too much into the engine.
