Default Carpet - Flooring

Hi agin,

(don't you think a newbie with an old truck is the best thing to put some new activity in a forum?)

Going down the list of things to fix in the truck and taking down notes for when I'll have the budget.

The flooring in the 1986 D150 will need to be replaced. I'm not sure if I want the molded carpet or that 1/8" molded rubber/vinyl. I don't want something too plush, but not too utilitarian either. Both are the same price at some online stores.

Anyway, the truck currently has some old, dirty black rubber that seems to be what originally came (it's a "custom", so I think that's the base model, even though it's called custom). It's pretty worn out and just needs to be pulled out. In the spot where you heel goes when it's over the brake or accelerator pedal, there is a big hole that goes through all the layrs and goes to the metal of the truck floor.

What needs to be done here? Can it wll be stripped to the metal and replaced? Does it need a special sheet of insulation below the carpet? (per description of the nylon carpet, it seems it comes bottom padded with something like that already). Is stripping everything out too much and does something in there need to remain (some insulation, I don't know, waterproofing stuff, tar, xyz...)? But in that case, what should one use to plug the whole with so there's a flt surface below the new carpet or rubber?

Thanks for any info!

What I would do if it were me is rip out the old carpet and check over the floor to see if there are any places that need patched. If or when the floor is pretty solid, then put in a replacement carpet, which if you buy from an automotive parts store, should have all the padding and insulation that you need, and be avalible in a wide aray of colors. I would imagine that it would be heavier where the heal of your feet would rest, but even if not, the last one lasted 20 years, so should the new one. Hope that helps somewhat.

Did you ever consider spraying the floor with that spray-on bedliner material? That is one route I am thinking of taking to make it durable and easier to clean

That's what I plan on doing with my truck in the future. Either that or some vinyl/rubber floor covering like the stuff in my '79 Ramcharger. Much more durable and stain/water resistant
