Default Torque Converter lock-up

On an old van my family used to have, the torque converter wouldn't come out of lock-up, so we had a friend who worked at the dealership and he unplugged it. I have an 83 Ram which is doing the same thing...is there anyway to unplug it from the computer or is it even controlled by the computer?

It's controlled by a solenoid if I remember right. I'm not sure where it is on the older transmissions though.
