Default Timing Chain Stretch???please help

I have an 89 powerram with 289,000 miles that has just recently stoped runing. Before it died it was have a harder and harder time to start. It would start kicking and then it would seem to run fine. While driving down the road it would just completly stop accelerating even though I was giving it gas. Then it just died. And when I tried to start it, it would backfire through the inake manifold. I have been told it was a bad timing chain. Please help if you know anything.
