Default Steering Wheel Lock Plate Remover

Back again.. gave up on getting replacement keys and cant get a locksmith to make a key so I am attempting to replace the ignition switch in the column (cheap parts) but having a problem. Purchased 2 tools one to remove the steering wheel which was easy and came right off and now I am using the second one Steering Wheel Lock Plate Remover tool but I can not get this off and wondering if the reason its not popping off is because the column is locked due to no keys to unlock it.

Basically the steering wheel is turned slightly to the right in the locked position from the last time it was moved when I had keys and not sure if this tool mfg assumes the column is unlocked.. Any input appreciated as I am about to lose it on this truck..

Thanks again..

Did you try turning the wheel to release tension on the lock mechanism? I dunno what the answer is for you, but that's all I got.

When the remover pushes the plate down, did you remove the lock ring on the steering shaft? it's just a piece or wire that fits in a groove.

Thanks to both of you.. It was the ring!! I couldnt really see it because even with the tension on the tool it was barely visible but I finally got it off and now I can see the ignition switch.. Autozone is getting me the switch tomorrow so Iam going to give it a shot.. I just hope I can put this all back together.. ;-)

Is there anywhere on this site that has chilton like diagrams for this truck or maybe manuals that can be downloaded either for free or at a cost? I wish I had that in the first place..

New ignition switch is in and very happy about that.. It's amazing all that work and when you finally get to the ignition switch all I had to do was depress a button and pull the ignition switch out.. I guess they cant make it too easy or stealing cars would be a piece of cake if you happen to carry around replacement ignition switches ;-)

Hey Thanks again.. This is the most useful forum I belong to.. I was totally missing the part about the ring until you reminded me about that.

Take care..
