86 d150 with no power
My 86 d150 just doesn't have a lot of power, it could be the transmission because it does leak but i think it is something else. If i stomp down on it i will usually get a lot of sputter and very little power, just jerky and sputtery. For normal driving under no loads it does ok, not what i would expect from a 318 but just ok. I was wandering about rebuilding the carb, but have very little experience when it comes to automobile carbs. I am very mechanically inclined and have done tons of other jobs just never fooled with the carbs before. I'm sure i can handle it but i need to know where the carb i.d. is so that i can get a rebuild kit. Alsodo you think this could be the reason for the trucks lack of power?
I had an old 86 chevy a few years ago with the same problem. I too had never really torn apart a carb, and to make matters worse, the truck had the wronge carb! Stock, it came with a 4 bl with a bunch of (at the time) new fangled electronic components. Well the prior owner decided to put a 2 bl cadilack carb on it! I did the research and wentto a junk yard. I found the right carb and messed with it for a while (to include a rebuild). After thatit still didn't realy run right.Later I foundthat other electronic mods had been doneto the truck ( ignigtion). The truck realy was an older engine configuration now. I wasted my the time and the money I spent at thejunk yard. I ended up buying a new Edelbrock 4 bl (with no gismos) for it and a jet kit. After the install, what a difference! My point, if you aren't an "old school carb man", maybe the best path is a new carb for a few $ (along with support from the co).Whatever you chose, good luck, and MerryChristmas!
Horatio102 I will checkon the cats, i didn't think i had any but i'll double check to make sure.
I hear you kurts2, that's what i'm wondering .... will it be a waste of time. I'm leaning towards anew carb instead of the rebuild if for no other reason than i will know what i have with a new one and there should be no chance of me screwing something up on a rebuild. Any suggestions, i'm not trying to build a hot rod just an old dependable truck.

Cadman I have the same model truck and therefor mine has the same problem but let me let you in on a little secret our truck came from the factory with what they say 125hp,,,so if you want more power do what I had to do,,take off all the smog pump and crap if your in a non emmissions state,,,put on a 4 barrel intake manifold and throw on your choice of 4 barrel 500-600cfm should be fine,,,see our 318's are held back alot on power the smog days were going on strong back when they were built and power was held back by power robbing components like the fan and fan clutch take them off and put on a flex fan
