Cool Weirdness on cold starting '11 'Venger 3.6

Hi,
Has anybody experienced the following before: On Our 2011 Avenger Heat 3.6 with 94k, I am hearing a "popping/sputtering sound upon a cold start.
I also smell a slight exhaust smell right around the valve cover and front CAT area closest to the radiator.
There are NO DTC codes and the MPG is fine along with the engine acting and feeling normal. Power is great as usual.
It has new plugs and coils.
After stopping by a couple of local auto repair shops and letting various wrench-spinners take a gander at where the CAT hooks onto the head ( Is the CAT closest to the radiator considered the Left or the Right CAT? ), One of The Mechanics noticed some dark sooty substance on the passenger's side of the jct where the upper-inlet end of the CAT interfaces with the integrated head-exhaust manifold.

Rather puzzling!
Any input or advice would be most appreciated.....
Thanks

UPDATEicked up the metal gasket from My local Mopar Dealer ($20) that goes between the head/exhaust manifold and, CAT and, knowing My limitations when it comes to some mechanical things, had it installed by a trusted mechanic.

It cost 1 hr labor ( $100 with tax).

The Parts Guy at Our Local Mopar Dealer said that this gasket doesn't fail much, which is good to know considering I have a feeling that if it were the gasket on the "back side" of the 3.6 the labor cost might be higher due to the time involved getting to it!

All is quiet now upon engine start and the exhaust smell is absent under the hood!
