Default first time down the track

Went to the track tonight to see how I am on the tree. Flickered the stage bulb every time, started out pretty good but once I had cars next to me, my lights started getting erratic. The 231 red light was just a stab at the tree, the 251 late, i let go on bottom bulb instead of halfway thru the middle bulb

I was bumping in around 800 rpm, went to 1200 once staged.

I'm having Sean program an SCT tuner for my truck, should get it at the end of this week. Hopefully I can have the tstat changed and computer fooled by next wednesday, and I can hit the wedneday night TnT and see what Sean got me.

I made 5 full pulls, then a single dump and a double dump in each lane.

I'll see what it does on the SCT.

Dumping is a bracket racing practice. I'm doing "spot dumping".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bracket_racing

The best way to set up for spot dumping is this:

Say I can stay consistently with .020 to 0.030 lights, but i hit .070 every now and then. That's a .040 variance. It sets up this situation:

Me:
RT 0.029
Dial: 12.44

Opponent:
RT 0.064
Dial 11.08

The handicap in the tree is 1.36 seconds, I leave first. I cut a 29 light, he cuts a 64. So once he's off the line, I have that 1.36, plus the 0.035 difference in the lights. So I've got 1.395 on him.

Now we're approaching the finish line. I'm ahead of him by a bunch. Because I had .035 on him from the starting line, I know that I NEED to be ahead of him by .035 or less at the stripe. If I'm any further ahead of him, I risk breaking out. If I'm behind him, he's getting to the line first. So I dump, and let him catch up. If I need to, I can add a whomp in there to get back ahead of him.

I know that a dump at the 660 cones kills .12. So I can judge if I need to kill all 12, and adjust my dump/whomp accordingly.

Lets say he runs 11.181, I dump right at the cones and run a 12.50. He's off dial by .101, for a total package of 0.165. I'm off dial by .06, for a total package of .089.

I have a tighter package, so I win.

Now let's say I'm second off the tree.

Me:
RT 0.073
Dial: 12.44

Opponent:
RT 0.036
Dial: 10.85

The handicap in the tree is 1.59 seconds, I leave first. I cut a 73 light, he cuts a 36. So once he's off the line, I have that 1.59, but he has 0.037 on me.

So we get to the top end, and we're almost dead even. But I know that because he tree'd me, for us to be together, Either he's lost that .037, or I've made it up. BUT, I dialed 4 up from my previous pass. So instead of dumping, I WANT to break out, because it will make the other guy think I had a decent light. It creates this scenario:

If I don't dump, I'll be .003 under the dial
He will think I had a decent light, and run out the back door. This will make him break out by that .037, which will be worse than me .003 break-out.

If he dumps, then I MUST dump, but I still have to keep my nose with him. I no longer know what I will run. If he dumps before the 660 mph cone, I can dump right at it, and know I'll killing exactly 12. If we're dumping after the 660 mph cone, I REALLY have no idea what I'll run. But because I dialed up by 4, I know I only need to kill .003. So I just have to nail the brakes like 5 feet before the timing cone.

Lets say I "push him out" by not dumping (he thinks i had a good light):

Me: .003 under
Him: .037 under

I win

Let's say that he dumps and I nail the brakes at last second:

Me: .001 to .01 slow
Him: Could be damn near anything

So whoever gets to the line first, without breaking out, wins. If I dump correctly, I should get to the line first, and not break out.

I'm gonna go again on wednesday night. This time with about 50 pounds of s*it out of the back seat, no GF in the passenger seat, and about 1/2 a tank less of fuel. Also gonna re-check front tire pressures so I know the starting line rollout is correct.

I went through the 1/8 mile traps in 2nd gear.

I bumped in around 800 RPM, flickering the stage light each time. Once the bulb was on, I brought it up to about 1200, when the middle bulb came on, I counted 2 one hundredths (half a bulb), punched it, THEN took my foot off the brake.

My truck is gutless under 2500 RPM. I asked Sean specifically to do anything he could to help idle to 2500. The V8 throttle body takes over from 2500 on up.

The tires are 265/65/16 or something like that (92.87" nominal rollout). I don't even remember.

1st: 2.74
2nd: 1.54
3rd: 1.00
Rear is 3.55

44 MPH = 1776 DRPM. That's 4866 RPM in first or 2735 in second.
56 MPH = 2260 DRPM = 3481 RPM in second gear.

When I go wednesday, I'm going to put my gopro aimed at the gauges and my DV cam up on the dash.

I'm not really sure what else to do, other than pull the air filter out and see what that does (i have the stock paper type in the stock airbox). Was going to switch to a fram or K&N drop-in filter with the 180 tstat and the SCT.

I'll also hit up a buddy to see if he'd throw 4.10's in my truck. Lose a little highway, but maybe the tuner will make it back up.
