Long tube or short tube headers for 5.9??
I was looking at a new set of headers for my 5.9, however I see there is both long tube and short tube headers, I know one is better for top end and the other for bottom end but I cant remember which. If any of you guys knew the answer to this please post, thanks alot for the help. Also if you have any reccomendations for headers to choose, that would be great.
Not really sure what the difference in length would play. I wouldn't think that length would be as important as diameter, but i may be wrong. I know a smaller diameter header will add more power at the lower end, and of course a larger diameter will add more in the upper rpm- just due to exhaust velocity. What kinda set up are you looking for? Are you doing alot of pulling or towing, or do you do more street type driving?
Long tube = better high end power
short tube = better low end power
considering most mods for our trucks slowly take away from low end, i would go with shorties.. i have gibson shorts on mine..

When Steve Dulcich tested long tube 4 into 1 headers very recently on a 360 Magnum engine there was almost no gain in either hp or torque below 2500 rpm. These headers seemed to have about 36 to 42 inch long primary pipes.
The official Tri-Y designs from Mopar Performance made under subcontract by either Mike Leach or Positive Performance Headers may do better below 2500 rpm.
Keep in mind that very annoying exhaust leaks are common with headers.

chris1974- I would personally be doing much more street use if I was to decide on headers. And when you say smaller diameter, do you mean a smaller number CFM wise or something else?

I dont even know whats available out there for your truck. I really haven't looked into headers- they say that my stock 4.7 manifolds flow almost as good as headers.

Chrysler does know how to make cast headers:

It is worth asking yourself
"Why don't they do this today?"

best headers.. for 5.9 would be Mopar PPHs... very expensive but comes with new y pipe and everything... only made it for 99-00 daks, 01-03 daks needed special buns for the exhuast for the o2 sensors..
