My 2000 SLT is making a different noise that after searching the forums i couldn't find anything. The noise it makes is what I would descibe as a "racheting clunk" that only does it when I an turning in either reverse or forward. It doesn't do it all the time just somtimes. I checked the rear diff fluid yes it probably needs a changing and there is plenty in it. Is this my diff's way of telling me that is is going to grenade on me?

 

Take it to the dealership and have them look at your transfer case. I had what sounds like the same problem and it ended up being the trasfer case.
