BFG is a popular tire because people are afraid to try something that isn't the standard - it's like back in the 80's when EVERYONE bought either a Mac or an IBM, before people realized that the clone PCs were just as good.
At any rate, EVERYONE at the Discount I go to runs the Yokos. I was suspicious, but with Yoko's try it for 30 days program, I figured what the hell. 2 years and 40k miles and they look great.

You know, I have to agree with you. I bought a pair of Yokohama's several years ago for a Ford pickup I owned and those things were still on the truck 60,000 miles later when I sold it. They one drawback on the Yoko's was that they were not particularly quiet. Not bad - just not great either. Overall, I think they're a very good value.
I just bought a set of Michelin LTX MS for my Dakota. They seem to be pretty good tires, but nothing spectacular. The one great thing I notice about them is the quiet, smooth ride. Not particularly important for a truck, but that's what stands out to me. The cornering and braking is average, at best. Wet braking, IMHO, seems to be a little weak.

What part of NY? I live in Dallas area and I happen to be in Hamilton, NY. My kid is being recruited by Colgate and a few other colleges up here for soccer and we're making the recruiting rounds. I've never been to NY before, not even NYC, and I am very pleasantly surprised at how charming the countryside is out here. The thing that immediately stands out about Hamilton is that it's in the middle of nowhere and it'll be really, really hard for the kid to get into trouble.

I too did a bunch of research, and opted for Bridgestone Dueller AT Revos. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money. I think they are great tires. Next to no road noise, decent traction, and so far they seem to be wearing well. Look them up, they are not the cheapest tire, but not too bad on the pocket book. Here's a pic:
