Default leaky exhaust

Hi all, I have a 99 Dodge Dakota. I have an exhaust leak in my exhaust pipe. Would I lose compression because of this? I would think not but I was told by a mechanic who works at a dealership that in some cases you can. If so, then can somebody explain to me how this is possible?

Thanks,

Jake
