Default Scheduled service????

My 98 Dak V8 4X4 just turned 78000 miles. About the same time my check engine light came on. Is this a scheduled service or do I need to get it checked out?

New update. Was going to drive it to auto zone to get them to plug in and read the codes for me. I got about 2 blocks from the house and it started sputtering. It never shut off but it had no power.I turned it around and on the trip home it ran great going back home.

you have a problem, isnt like newer cars like toyota with that damn maintenace required light ( hence i hav an '07 toyota yaris)... you can pull the code yourself i beleive by doing the key dance, take your key, turn the ignition ON, OFF, ON, OFF, ON, without starting the engine and look at your odometer display, see what code comes up, it may work for your year, not sure

When's the last time you had a tune up? Have the codes read by a code scanner. My guess is its a misfire and it just needs a tune up.

There is a way to reset the Maint Req'd light on the Toyota Yaris. All it means is you need an oil change. Make sure the odo display is showing the odometer (not the trip meters) Hold down the trip reset button and turn the ignition on. Continue holding until the light goes out and start the motor.
