Default rear end gears

I have a 2000 Dakota 3.9 liter 4x4. I changed the gears in the rearend at the begining of the year, i pulled the cover off the pumpkin today and there are shavings at the bottom, the gears all look to be in good shape. Is this normal wear on the gears causing this? I put a few thousand miles on the truck since the change. Also the transfer case has a crack in it where the driveshaft bolts in at, could this be caused by the gears that went bad or is it why there are shavings now, any ideas would be helpful. thanks.
