I heard of the exhaust manifold studs breaking on the 4.7 (fairly common) but not the manifolds themselves.

Really ? Ya it sounds like a clicking fornm the outsidce but inside the engine compartment you can definatly hear an exhaust leak. Once everything warms up it goes away

That is the sympton for broken studs, pretty common on the 4.7. When it is cold, there is a leak where the broken stud is (gap between the manifold and head). As the manifold heats up, it expands and closes the gap - the clicking goes away.

Have seen some with broken studs and some with just blown gaskets. Little bit of a pain but an easy fix.

Happened to me this summer. Both sides started doing it about the same time. Cost me $600 bucks for new manifolds to be put on both sides. Not a good time. I heard the Grand Cherokees with the 4.7 cost about 1300 to fix both sides though, Mopar charges more for their mainfolds they are different a little bit somehow, so it could be worse

I just turn up the radio in my two jeeps and the sound goes away. sorry for the sarcasim, Ive owned four jeeps, still have two, selling one this week. the dakota is going to be the full time fun truck. I hope I dont have to go through that manifold crap again. seems a little more complicated to take the dodge motor apart.

The cracking problem is people over torque them. mechanics use air tools and way over-torque stuff. same on assembly lines..
