Default Loose steering column?????!!!

I have had a noticeable "clunk" when I turn the wheel at slow speeds and I guess I never paid attention before, but my steering column seems to have a lot of play. I can push it up and down about an inch both ways. I do not have tilt steering (don't know if that matters). What could possibly be going out in the front end? Ball joints, ect?? Thanks for any input!!

Check the steering linkage coming out of the firewall and see if it is loose.

Without looking at it right now, would that cause the clunk? I am assuming it is easy to tighten that?? Am I wrong??
