Default Back up lights, working, then not working

So before when I went to put my truck in reverse the lights would never come on. I would always have to pull down the lever until im almost at the point where im in "N", then the lights would come on. But now, they don't even come on at all. I checked with a voltameter(think thats what its called) to see if there was any power even going to the lights and there isn't. Where should I start? Ideas? I could tolerate this before, but now I want to get this fixed, definetly a hazard when people can't see you backing up.

probably a bad switch on the tranny, that sends the power when you are in reverse

i know how to adjust the selector, drive the truck arounda nd make sure that you are in gear, than take the kick panel underneath the steering wheel off and there will be a little box with a giant thumb screw on it just turn that until the orange selector is located correctly and than play with it and drive it to see if its right

I already did the adjuster part. Done that a while ago. What exactly is the switch called?

Ok, so yesterday I looked underneath the bumper to see if any wires were cut or anything that sent the power. When I did it looked like the wires were wrapped up in black electrical tape, like someone just took an easy way out to fix what was happening. Could it be that some of the wires are touching andnot giving any power to the reverse lights?

Also with this switch that you guys are talking about. Have any of you ever changed it and if so how hard is it?
