Default gas mileage

Hello, from cent.va.Im on the gas thing again. My 01 dakota 4x4,club cab with shell is sucking me dry at the pump.I drive appox,40 miles one way to a ski resort, for a 6hr part time evening shift.Im useing a 1/4 tank round trip.I have done tune up aired tires etc.It seems to make no change if i drive 55 or70.I was going to remove the camper shell and try that.I need the 4 wheel drive to get up the mountian in bad weather.thanks for any thoughs.[:@]

Ummm if I travel 80 miles I definitely use about a quarter tank of gas, sometimes more, especially in winter depending on wind/where i am driving(uphill, downhill, highway, city, etc.)

What kind of engine do you have? What kind of actual numbers are you getting mpg? 4x4 Dakotas dont get much better then about 17 or 18 highway unless you lower it and do quite a few mods. In real life, i have never come across anyone with a dodge truck that gets better then 19 or 20 mpg highway. I am not sure if the people on here who say they get 28 mpg are lying or just know a hell of a lot more about mods then I do, but remember you bought a truck and if you are looking to get consistently over 18 mpg you trade it in for an accord or civic. Just my 2 cents

poor gas mileage could be caused by so many issues which makes it so hard to pinpoint. an '01 Dakota is usually pretty good about letting you know if something is not working right (check engine light)

80 miles on a 1/4 tank is not unreasonable especially if youre using 4X4 alot. want better gas mieage? get a subaru!

Thanks eveyone with all things considered the truck is about the norm.16to80 hwy,12 city,I do drive up the mountian for 5 miles or so.I have noticed that if you just let it run 65 or so it doest shift up and down as much and does some what better, over all its a good truck.
