Default 1999 Dakota starting issues

I have been having intermittent starting issues. It started a month ago and has had me baffled ever since. Truck stalled while driving in the rain but it fired right back up. When I checked the code it was a cam sensor code. Tested the sensor and it was fine and distributor looked fine. A few weeks passed and I started having issues with starting. Sometimes it was a quick start, sometimes it was a few extra cranks and one time recently it was a 5 second crank before it would start. I have also had, on ocassion, a "surge" or "spike" where the truck would all of a sudden jerk forward while driving I have taken it to a local mechanic and the dealer and they all say the same thing. We couldn't find any problems and we couldn't reproduce the problems you were having. Back in July I had an issue with starting and thought it was the fuel pump. I replaced the fuel pump and it wasn't it. took it to a mechanic and they said it was the crank sensor. fixed it and it ran fine until now. I have asked if the ignition coil, wires, spark plugs distributor and even the PCM were all ok and the dealer says they are fine. Is there something I am missing? I am tired of people thing I am crazy. The truck only has 81,000 miles on it.

I have seen vehicles many times doing the same kind of thing yours is. I don't know how many dealership employees are on here, but at mine if we have a vehicle that shows a cam sensor or crank sensor code we always replace both. Especially in cases like this where the cam sensor is not hard to replace. I have also seen where a faulty cam sensor in a 3.9/5.2/5.9 can cause it to not start when hot but would start and run normal when cold. My advise....replace the cam sensor.
