Default 5 speed transmission problem

Hi all,

I'm pretty new here and have a question/problem. I have a 2000 Dakota Sport 4X2 V-6 5 speed. After the truck gets warm and has been driven for a while, it is nearly impossible to get into first gear when stopped. You can downshift into first when rolling slowly up to a stop. Even second is difficult. I have taken to either turning the truck off and restarting it once in gear, or get the truck rolling slightly in third and going back to second to get going. It does not exhibit any other symptoms of a worn out clutch. It goes into reverse without grinding, has normal pedal height and engage point. No problems shifting etc. It just has this annoying habit of not wanting to go into first.

Can you bleed the system? Could it be master/slave cylinder?

What do you think?

Thanks,
Dale

well if you can get it into second try going from second then first when u come to a stop thats what i do because mine did the same thing wouldn't go into first sometimes from a stop so i've just gotten in the habit of going second to first anytime im stopped and also 5 to reverse idk it worked for me and now it doesn't bother me just a suggestion

Thanks guys.

The slave cylinder is what I am going to replace. I have found them on ebay new for about $60. The parts stores want over $100. Is there a noticeable difference in quality? If it lasts another 100k miles, I'm ok with it. I just don't want to replace every 20k or so.

I would go with a better quality Slave Cylinder only because theres alot of aftermarket parts that dont match up to dealer parts. and if your getting it from anywhere like napa, auto zone, or advanced auto, its deffinately NOT going to last 100k plus. Also keeping up on al the maintenance is a factor too.

im pretty sure you have to replace the slave and master at the same time because there is no way to bleed the system and get air out
