If you have a laptop and want to do the nerd thing. Check out http://www.scantool.net/ I used one on my 96 ranger and it did the job. It will give you more data to look at than a standard scan tool sold at the autoparts store or Wal-Mart.
From what I remember it will also log data as you drive.
Just to throw this out there, if you just need to look up some codes, you can "borrow" them from autozone. They have a policy to hod on to your driver's license and let you use it for free
