I'm in a pickle...
Im have no idea what i would rather have, a dodge dakota probably a 2000 or 2001 dodge dakota 4 door 4x4, but would i rather want a 4.7 or 5.9? I just need enough power to beat those ricers that get annoying, and would like good passing power. I no im not gonna get great gas milage, but dont want super bad. If i got the 4.7 i prob would get the 3.91 gear for better accleration. But what would be better 4.7, or 5.9? thanks

RE: I'm in a pickle...
For what it is worth, the only "race" I have ever been in with my stock 4.7 QC 4x4 was against a riced out early 00's Civic, complete with carbon fiber look hood, rims, fart can, and F1 wing. Idiot was 2 ft from my bumper on the highway on ramp. I said, "Ah, a fast car is behind us" to my three passengers, while contemplating tapping the brakes to put a nice 3 inch square hole in his "battle kit" or what ever they call that funny looking front bumper. My passengers all turned around to see said "fast car" and the driver of undoubtedly noticed. Anyway, I get on the highway and he darts to the left lane. The ramp was pretty tight so we started at about 35 mph. I buried the throttle until about 80. At this point he was 2-3 car lengths back and losing ground. I let off and we all laughed. The ricer flyby then followed. I never thought of this truck as being fast (except right after testing an older Nissan Frontier), but it sure gave me a good feeling when I beat that civic. I honestly didn't expect that outcome, I thought it would be about even or so. Especially considering I have 4 adults in the car and he was alone.
So yeah, I think the 4.7 is fast enough for me. I also have the "slow" gears...

benefit is, the tranny behind the 4.7 is durable, yet theres more mods for the 5.9 but the tranny behind the 5.9 isnt as durable, granted its an old torqueflite with a compter and electronics controlling it, that IMO is why they are crappy transmissions... 4.7 is impressive for what it offers however

With the 5.9 you will be able to upgrade it a lot more, as it's been out longer more parts are available, as for the tranny okay, the 545rfe is better and you could always do a very fun drop, a 5.7L hemi (lots of work though.)
The 5.9 tranny 46re isn't all that bad, as long as you take car of it, it will be good to you. Maybe get a shift kit?

I have a 4.7 and I've driven it twice across country moving pulling fully loaded and towing a 10' Uhaul. tranny and front brakes got hot in June on the section of Hwy between Texas and Albuquerque. Other than that it can tow. Only thing I want to add is a tranny cooler and better front brakes. I plan on keeping ours pretty much stock other than maybe cooler, brakes and a full suspension lift.

the largest difference between the 4.7 and the 5.9 is that the 4.7 is more of the work engine while the 5.9 is seen as the performance engine. if you are looking for 4x4 and an ability to tow just about anything, than get the 4.7 but if you want more a sport oriented truck (oxymoron?) then look no further than the 5.9. also the 4.7 has a better suited transmission than the 5.9 does
