Default transmission slipping??????

i have a 97 5.2 and going 60 mph is fine but when i want to pass a car say, i slowly step on the gas and it shifts down one gear for a second showing more torque, then it shifts to an even lower gear or feels like neutral whinding the motor out. is it just slipping or something else or what? the fluid is full. also going highway speeds if i completely let off the gas the speedo drops way too fast it feels like. almost as if its engaged in too low of a gear but its not whinding out. thanks guys

When was the last timethe transmission had a filter and fluid change, band adjustment ? That is where I'd start. At least while you have the pan down changing the fluid, you could see if anything is laying in the pan, and look around. Check the fluid on the dip stick. Is is red or brownish? Does it smell burnt?

sounds like your front band is going out or your torque converter is kicking in. Do you feel the slipping while accelerating? if you do you could use a front band adjustment or a rebuild...
