before you waste ur money and fill ur head that ur truck is "like new" by changing to a synthetic oil, two questions, where do you live is it20 and below alot? Do you race Ur truck? if not your not really gaining much, you still need to change your oil every 4000-5000 miles, yea the oil itselfwont break down as fast, but it still gets dirty...and dont get any ideas buying that engine cleaner crap to get the sludge out, ya think ya had leakey seals nd sludge, wait till ya bust it loose at one time, ur askin for a engine rebuild doing that!

save the extra 4-5 bucks a quart buy somthing nice

i agree...synthetic is a waste of money...these engines will run well for over 200,000 miles and beyond if taken care of. i can think of other things to spend the extra20 bucks youd spend on an oil change, like gas. you can also help keep your oil cleaner by keeping your air filter and TB clean, you could buy a new air filter every oil change and still come out ahead money wise.

i wouldn't nessacarily call it a waste of money. there is a reason why oil foundrys and other places that need oil to last longer switch to it. i forget the explanation but it does protect better and last longer. for me its worth the added protection even though im a poor college student i can afford it. i change my oil every 4500-5k. if you buy the oil at wal mart in the 5 quart jug you can get it for less then 40 dollars and thats including a 9 dollar mobil one oil filter. the argument can go either way so im not gonna argue with anyone just stating my opinion.

if one can afford the extra money spent every 4000 miles or so, thats great, i still dont think it is necessary like others have said. long term testing shows that there isnt enough sludge or harm done to a motor to warrant synthetics.manufacturers even say that synthetics are not needed as long as you use a good detergent oil and change it regularly. like imnothot02 said, synthetics are an advantage in a race engine and thats about it.conventional oil will break down a little faster, yes, but not fast enough to harm the engine except in extreme conditions and in that case just change it more often.you could change oil every 1000 miles and still spend less than with synthetic and it would also always be cleaner thansynthetic changes every 5000 miles.over a 200,000 mile period one will spend at least $1500 more on synthetic oil and at that point it will be about time for a new motor anyway and with the money saved you could replace the engine...my opinion is that for average daily driver, synthetic is a waste of money and regular oil is sufficient. it has worked in engines for over 100 years and now all of a sudden in the last few years its no good? i dont get that...

like i said im not gonna argue i feel its more personal preferance than anything i just like to take care of my engine so it can last as long as possible and something thats gonna help it stay cooler and lubricate it better is something i feel is worth it. i dont see how yout get someone spending $1500 more over a 200,000 mile period though with synthetic. if i spend $40 and change every 4000 thats about 50 oil changes and $2000 and someone else spends say $25 and changes every 3000 thats about 67 oil changes which would cost $1675 only a $325 dollar difference over 200,000 thousand miles anywyas im not trying to change your mind i just feel its worth it in my book.

Pennzoil full synthetic in the motor, and mobil 1 in the differentials. Truck seems to like it, and so do I. Only about $6 more at WalMart from the regular oil. [sm=trust_me.gif]

i went by what i do, i spend around 15-20 on oil and a filter and change it between 4000-5000 miles, i figure about 750 bucks over 200,000 miles, give or take. thats $1,250 less than you. but anywho, its your money and you spend it on what you think is right, to each his own.

I get 6 quarts of Pennzoil Platinum at Walmart for $24.94. The best Fram filter for 4.97.= $29.91.... If you're buying Pennzoil regular 5w30. It is 2.83 a quart, so that's $16.98 plus 4.97 for the better fram filter = $21.95...... That's $7.96 more for the Full synthetic oil. I'm sorry, I did lie, I said $6.00. I was $1.96 off. I'll try to be more precise next time.... So by my calculations of 40 oil changes at 5,000 mile intervals over 200,000 miles using the present day price of material for an oil change, It will cost you $318.40 more to use synthetic. $7.96 x 40 = $318.40... Oh my, that is rather expensive.

Synthetic oil is easy to get cheap. Advance and AutoZone regularly run sales, and even BOGO (By One, Get One). Don't pay full price for it; wait until it goes on sale and stock up.

Why, right now, you can get 5 quarts of Castrol Syntec and a Fram TG for $25: http://www.autozone.com/images/in_ou...g4_0306_08.pdf

And keep an eye on the sales and promotions forum on BobIsTheOilGuy.com (BITOG): http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...=33&page=1

For example, it appears that next month, AutoZone is running Valvoline SynPower and a Fram TG for $19.99.
