Default rear ends

i have a 97 4wd dakota and my rear end has locked up in it. what i want to know is can i put another rear end in that is not 4wd? i have disabled the 4wd in it and dont plan on hooking it back up. so do i have to use a 4wd rear end? and how do i figure out what the gear ratio is for it?

there really isn't a thing as a 4wd rear end. you can get a rear from any dakota and it should work. if you dont plan on hooking the front back up like you said you dont have to worry about matching gears but if you ever do you need to make sure there the same front and back. to tell the gears on your truck you can look in the glove box or request a build sheet here-http://www-5.dodge.com/wccsapp/unive...amp;category=R
