Default Oil.

My oil is due and I was wondering about Amsoil or Mobile One.

My Dakota has always had the Mopar brand oil. Should I be worried about changing brands?

What's your opinion?

Thanks in advance.
Cameron.

moe in wichita ks

the most important thing about oil is to have lots of zinc in the oil. i have done some searching on the internet on oil, filters, additives. i like to have oil as thick as i can and it still start in cold. so here is what i use, 2001 dak v6. Valvoline premium blue 15w-40 oil it has lots of zinc in it. Purolator PL 14670 PURE ONE filter, short ver same length as a fram ph43, use only a PURE ONE filter that is shown by the P in the part no, the long version is PL 30001 the long ver is the same length as a fram ph8a, may not fit all frames. under NO conditions use a fram filter. then you need to go to zddplus.com site and get some zinc from them. my truck starts ok in the winter, but we normally dont get below 0 f.
i did have trouble with 20-50 not wanting to turn over in the winter.

How often do you change your oil? Just use a quality motor oil. The high mileage type oils are excellent values, and will help to keep your seals pliable and as fresh as they can be for how old they are. I personally use Valvoline MaxLife 10W-30.

The need for zinc is highly over-rated, and too much can score the camshafts. These trucks don't have flat tappet cam followers. They're modern engines, rated to run on SL/SM oils. Don't add stuff to your oil. It's not needed, and indeed recommended against by your owner's manual.

JasonA said it best....high mileage oil is great, and any good name brand is good to use...just change it regularly and you will be fine using about anything...use the search on this site and you will get a ton of opinions.

people worry too much about oil. other things will go wrong way before you have a problem caused by oil. its not so much what you use, its how often you change it as far as im concerned. these engines are tough and you will get 200,000 plusmiles even if you use a crappy oil and do regular changes. thats just my opinion.

its your opinion but its true my v6 98 dakota had 198000 on it when we sold it and it still ran beautifully, had more pep than my dads which only had 70k on it so take care of it w/ regular changes and it will last as long as you want it to just dont forget to take care of it

It's all how you treat it, my v6 which is removed had 205k km's still ran like a new engine, just the exhaust manifold was warped. But there is one thing I do want to try, Z-Max it looked really cool and penetrates the metal too. They do a really cool test on like trucks or something...

zMax.com can't find the video but it's very interesting...

If u can go with synthetic oil. It lubricates better, lubricates in the cold betterlasts longer, but that doesn't mean to go longer between changes. It also prolong engine life. My next change will be with synthetic.
